In Ireland, most herds follow a compact spring-calving pattern aligned with grass growth. A dairy cow will typically reach peak milk production approx. 8–9weeks after calving. From there, production naturally declines. The goal is to: 

— Achieve a high, efficient peak
— Minimise the rate of decline after peak
— Maintain milk solids output from grazed grass for as long as possible 

Research from Teagasc shows that each additional litre at peak milk can result in approximately 200– 250 litres extra over the full lactation. Therefore, early lactation management is critical to maintaining the overall curve. 

  • 1. Maximising Early Lactation Performance 

Smooth Transition Management 
The transition period (3 weeks pre- and post-calving) sets the foundation for peak yield. Key priorities include: 

— Maintaining body condition score (BCS) of 3.0–3.25 at calving
— Preventing excessive BCS loss in early lactation
— Ensuring adequate magnesium and energy intake
— Minimising metabolic disorders (milk fever, ketosis) 

Cows that lose too much condition in early lactation will experience a sharper drop-off later in the curve. Digestive function is a vital so that cows can utilise feed and produce milk. 

Early Grazing Management 
Spring grass is highly digestible, high in protein and supports high milk solids output. To optimise early lactation: 

— Turn cows out as early as ground conditions allow
— Graze down to 3.5–4 cm residuals
— Supplement strategically is vital, grass dry matter can be low and grass can be low in fibre which can cause Sub Acute Rumen Acidosis (SARA). A farmer needs to supplement with what is missing from the diet 

Balancing energy intake. during the first rotation is essential to support peak milk and reduce excessive body reserve mobilisation. 

  • 2. Managing Peak Milk Production

Peak milk typically occurs in March–May depending on calving date. Achieving a strong peak requires: 

— Adequate dry matter intake (16–18+ kg DM/day in early lactation)
— High-quality leafy swards and often buffer feeding is required to maintain Dry matter intake
— Proper allocation and rotation length (18–21 days in spring)
— Appropriate concentrate feeding (based on grass supply and cow genetic merit) 

  • 3. Maintaining Mid-Lactation Production (May–July) 

The biggest threat to maintaining the lactation curve is a rapid drop after peak. To limit sharp declines it is important to focus on: 

Grass Quality Control 
— Remove surplus paddocks as high-quality bales
— Avoid stemmy, headed-out swards
— Maintain rotation length at 18–21 days
— If you have to supplement due to drought or wet conditions supplement with quality feed and not poor feed ingredients. 

Fertility and Energy Balance
A compact calving pattern depends on strong fertility performance. Cows in severe negative energy balance may struggle to go back in calf, shortening lactation length. Ensuring adequate energy intake in early and mid-lactation helps maintain both production and reproductive performance.

  • 4. Summer Management and Preventing Slumps 

In June and July, grass quality can deteriorate rapidly if not controlled. Heat stress can also affect intakes. 

Strategies include
— Tight post-grazing residuals
— Regular measuring of grass (weekly farm walks)
— Strategic nitrogen use to maintain grass growth
— Buffer feeding during drought or grass deficits 

Even short-term feed deficits can cause permanent drops in the lactation curve that are not fully recovered later. 

  • 5. Late Lactation and Extending Milk Solids 

In a spring-calving system, many cows are 200+ days in milk by autumn. Maintaining milk solids into September and October improves overall yield per cow. 

Key practices:
— Maintaining grass quality in autumn rotations
— Avoiding excessive BCS gain before drying off
— Extending lactation only where cows are in calf and profitable 

  • Conclusion 

Maintaining the lactation curve in a spring-calving herd in Ireland is about consistency — consistent grass quality, consistent energy intake, consistent fertility performance, and consistent cow management. 

A high peak sets the potential, but daily grazing management determines whether that potential is realised. In Ireland’s grass-based system, the most profitable herds are not necessarily those with the highest peak yields, but those that sustain milk solids production efficiently from February through to autumn while maintaining compact calving and strong fertility performance.
